FAQ:

Q: What is the difference between a therapist, counselor, social worker, and psychologist?

There are so many different types of mental health degrees; understanding the letters behind someone’s name and different terms can feel very confusing. It is important to know that the term therapist does not tell you what type of degree or licensure that therapist has. It actually also doesn’t tell you even if they are licensed. Each type of therapist has a different licensure board, type of training, and licensure requirements. You can think of therapists as an umbrella term and underneath that umbrella are social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, school counselors, licensed professional counselors, and associate professional counselors. This is like how a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and medical doctor are all types of physicians.

Q: What is a psychologist?
A psychologist is a mental health professional who has a doctorate degree. A psychologist in Georgia must attend a 4-year graduate program, then one year residency, and then a postdoctoral fellowship. They must complete a certain number of hours to be able to practice on their own without supervision. Psychologist is a regulated and protected term. In the state of Georgia, to be able to use the term psychologist you must also take a national psychology licensure exam, Georgia state written licensure exam, and Georgia oral licensure exam. You must then complete continuing education credits to be able to reapply for licensure ever two years. All the therapists at Best Within You Therapy & Wellness are psychologists that hold active licenses in the state of Georgia as well as other states.
Q: How do I know if someone is a therapist or a psychologist?
When you see Dr. in front of a mental health professionals name it can be a clue that they are a psychologist. A psychologist must also have a PhD or a PsyD degree. If you see someone who says Dr. in front of their name with a PhD or PsyD but calls themselves a therapist, it is possible they are not eligible, or have not kept or maintained necessary licensure requirements for psychology licensure. A therapist that uses the Dr. title may also have a different type of degree such a social work degree. However, for some people it’s a personal preference on if they call themselves a therapist or psychologist. Many psychologists use both terms interchangeably. If seeing a licensed psychologist feels important you can always ask the clinician about licensure status.
Q: Should I see a therapist or psychologist?
This is a very personal choice. We believe that finding a mental health professional who you trust and feel safe with and is experienced in what you are coming to therapy for is a priority. At Best Within You Therapy & Wellness we will help match you with one of our psychologists based on what you are looking for and what brings you into therapy. Everyone offers complimentary phone consultations where you can ask questions and determine fit before making an appointment.
Q: How long does therapy last and how many therapy sessions will I need?
Therapy is personalized to you. We do not offer a one size fits all approach. Some of our clients have been working with us for years while others chose to see us for a couple of months. Together with your psychologist you will talk about your goals, frequency of sessions, and appointment lengths. Typically, we believe meeting weekly is best at first as we are getting to know you. However, this will always be a discussion between you and your individual clinician.
Q: Can I do therapy online and in person?

Yes! We offer in person sessions in Atlanta as well as secure video sessions. Some of our clients chose to do both. We also offer walk and talk sessions with some of our psychologists where you can go on a walk and have a therapy session.

Q: Can you provide therapy to clients outside of Georgia?

Yes! We are all licensed in 35 states through PsyPact Licensure. Some of our psychologists are also licensed in Florida.

Q: I am ready to start therapy what is my next step?

Complete our appointment request form to be connected with a psychologist for an appointment or complimentary consultation call. We look forward to working with you.
