Depression Therapy

Are you feeling sad and just going through the motions?

Do you find yourself not feeling as happy as you imagine you could be?

Do things in your life not bring you as much joy as they used to?

Are you feeling less motivated?

Do you not feel your best and hope there is a way to feel less sad or depressed?

Feelings of sadness or depression can happen to anyone

It doesn’t matter if you have a great family, friends, job, or all the money in the world. Feelings of sadness and depression do not care. Anyone can experience depression or feelings of sadness regardless of their life circumstances. Some people may feel sad for no reason that makes any logical sense to them. Other times people can develop feelings of sadness or depression after a big change or loss.

As psychologists who provide depression therapy, we want to assure you that no matter why you feel depressed or sad, no matter the cause, know that you are not alone. In 2019, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, 19.4 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode. We live in a fast paced society with so much pressure. We also live in a culture where we are supposed to look a certain way, raise kids a certain way, or live a certain type of life. It can just be too much at times.

While many people experience depression, the good news is that therapy can help. You do not have to suffer with feelings of depression. With the support of a psychologist who is trained in treating depression, you can experience relief in your feelings of sadness.

How do I know therapy will help me?

While we cannot offer 100% guarantees that depression therapy will help you feel better, our experience and the research shows that therapy is effective. Therapy teaches you skills to help change your thinking and behaviors. Therapy for depression also helps you work through feelings of sadness, loneliness, or frustration.  You will have a comfortable space where you can meet with an expert in depression. You also don’t have to leave your home – if you do not want to. You can curl up with a blanket and cup of tea and speak to a therapist who is experienced in treating depression from your own couch.

Do I have to take medication for depression?

Taking medication for depression is a personal choice. Therapy is an effective treatment for depression and taking medication for depression can also be an effective treatment. The combination of therapy and medication for some people is able to help relieve symptoms at the fastest rate. For some clients that we work with we may suggest meeting with a psychiatrist for a consultation about medication. However, we have worked with many clients who have gotten out of depressive episodes and significantly improved their symptoms without taking medication. As psychologists we cannot prescribe medication, so if you are wanting medication we can make a referral. We work with many physicians and psychiatrists and are happy to connect you with someone for medication.

How do I know when to reach out for support?

The best advice we can give is if your gut is telling you that something is wrong – trust it. If you are reading this, it is a good sign you would benefit from support. You know yourself better than anyone, so if you suspect you may be having symptoms of depression, you probably are. You may think you can handle these symptoms on your own, but you don’t have to. Qualified professionals are here to listen, understand, and help you. Maybe you just need a few sessions or maybe the therapy relationship lasts longer. Even if you are just feeling sad, therapy can help. You do not need a professional diagnosis of depression to seek out mental health support. The bottom line – if something feels off, ask for help.
