What Insomnia Therapy Looks Like

Your therapist will first complete a thorough assessment of your sleep history. We may also inquire beyond sleep asking you about other areas in your life that could be impacting you getting a good night’s rest.

Insomnia therapy often includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). This is considered the gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for sleep problems. It is incredibly effective! With CBT-I, your therapist will address the thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that interfere with sleep. CBT-I helps you reduce nighttime worry, fall asleep faster, wake less often during the night, and feel more rested during the day.

Some of the tools and techniques you may work on in insomnia treatment include:

  • Cognitive restructuring – learning to challenge and change unhelpful beliefs about sleep that create stress and anxiety.
  • Stimulus control  – this is about strengthening the connection in your brain between your bed and sleeping instead of your bed and wakefulness or worry.
  • Relaxation training – practicing techniques such as mindfulness, breathing, or progressive muscle relaxation to calm your body. Your therapist will talk about when to use them.
  • Education – identifying lifestyle and environmental factors that could be impacting your ability to fall and stay asleep. Your therapist will discuss the impact of these factors as well as important changes to make.
